Tutorial: Organise iPhone & iPod touch apps in iTunes

Finally, Apple has provided you with a way to manage all the apps you’ve accumulated since the App Store launched just over a year ago…

We have no idea why it took so long to get here, but it has finally arrived. That’s right people, you can finally arrange your apps in iTunes. Despite the nearly flawless software in the iPhone and iPod touch, one major niggle has always been that organising apps has been a pain in the backside. Having to drag an icon across multiple screens was impractical and long-winded, and as a result completely un-Apple. So, with a combination update of iPhone/iPod touch OS 3.1 and iTunes 9, you can now get all those apps in order. The process is much the same as it is on the iPhone, it’s just that you are able to see all of your Home screens at once so that moving apps is easier and quicker. You can also change the order of Home screens if you wish. Then, once you sync, the changes you have made will be enforced upon the device itself.

1: Download and hit the tabs

Once you’ve downloaded the software, connect your device and head to the Applications tab. You can now see all of your Home screens. Click the one you want to edit and it’ll appear in the main window

2: Click and cross

Select an application by clicking on it. A blue ring will indicate that it’s selected and a cross will appear on the corner, which allows you to remove it – just like it does on the device itself.

3: Drag and drop

It is also possible to drag and drop your applications into a different order on the Home screen, or you can drag an application into another screen on the right.

4: Move screens

You can also drag the Home screens themselves into a different order on the right-hand side. Just click on a Home screen and drag it into a new position before releasing it.
