Keeping track of all the music on your iPad can be a bit of a pain. It’s surprising how much music you can fit onto even just the 16GB version. With all that music, it makes sense to keep track of it all and to create playlists. Of course, listening to whole albums is fine, but then we all have our favourite tracks and like to hear them more often than others. Creating playlists manually is a great way of doing this, but it’s time consuming and if you don’t keep them updated they soon get tiresome. You could just stick your whole music collection on random, but even this throws up issues like those hidden tracks or fillers that ruin a smooth transition, or the odd song you’re bored of hearing. The best solution may well be Genius mixes. Apple has created a tool that lets you select a track and automatically create a playlist of music that complements each other. It’s a great way of keeping the music going around a certain theme and it’s incredibly reliable.

I am really confused, you say open iPod applications but on my iPad 2 there is no app called iPod applications please help!
Hi Reader,
Thanks for getting in touch. This tutorial was written quite a while ago now, and the iPod app has since been renamed to ‘Music’. Other than that, everything should be the same.

My IPad 2 says my genius playlist is not enabled, how do I enable it
Hi Alex,
When did that message appear? To create a genius playlist in the new ‘Music’ application, you need to select a song and then click the atom icon on the right hand side of the top bar. If you don’t have enough similar songs in your library it won’t be able to create a playlist, but otherwise it should work. If not, you may need to sync it with iTunes on your computer, and check that Genius is enabled on there. If you have never sent any Genius data to Apple (when Genius is enabled, this happens automatically) then it may not be able to create a playlist. Try enabling it on your computer first (if it’s not done already), then syncing, and let us know how it goes!

Hi there – Glad to see this thread. Genius is enabled on my iTunes, and yet my iPad 2 never lets me create a Genius playlist based on any song (purchased from iTunes or not) I’m listening to. Funny thing is I don’t have the same problem with my iPhone 3GS – yes, I’m still cranking away at my barely working 3gs
Any guidance you can provide will be appreciated.
Thanks!
