iLife Tutorial: Add a scrolling text effect in iMovie

by iCreate Team

A video is incomplete without being top and tailed by a title and credits sequence. Here’s how to make those credits roll!

You had to print your title or credits on a sheet of paper, use a vision mixer to invert the clip and turn black lettering to white, then key the text over the footage. To get the text to actually scroll involved splashing out cash on an expensive caption generator. Thanks to iMovie, we can add slick-looking text with ease (and customise font, colour and alignment to suit our footage). We can also make those credits scroll in a smooth and professional looking way.

      Help, please.
I’m trying to create scrolling credits (crawl) for a presentation comprised of about 30 video clips. I’ve created the clips in iMovie, and am presenting them in Keynote. The problem is that iMovie is balking when I try to create the credit crawl:

So far, I’ve created a 3:52 video clip for the background of the credits, and created a (blue) “text banner” for the scrolling credits crawl that coincides with the video clip. I’ve entered all of the text for the crawl (title and performer information, etc.) for all of the clips into the text banner.

It was my understanding that iMovie adjusts the entirety of the text scroll to fit the amount of time alloted to the text banner. However, when I try to check the composited credits, the text chops-off before the end of the video clip. Even if I adjust the time alloted for the crawl (shortening or even extending it beyond the end of the video) the scrolling speeds-up or slows-down accordingly, but the text chops-off at the same place.

When I double-check the text (highlight and scroll from beginning to end) it is all there; it just doesn’t show up when I try to play it.

      FYI: I’m using iMovie 9.0.2, under OS 10.6.5 on a MacBook Pro-17
      Any ideas?
