Console-quality HD games on an iPad, with a wireless controller? Sign us up!

The iPad, and previously the iPhone, have fast become the biggest mobile gaming platform in the world, with millions of people downloading simple apps like Angry Birds to their devices to play on the move. Now, though, there is a new kid on the block, and it’s going to blow Angry Birds out of the metaphorical water.

The OnLive service launched in both the US and UK for Macs and PCs a few months ago, and it has changed the way a lot of people play games completely. The system allows you to play a high-definition game on any machine, whether it’s a £200 netbook running Windows Vista or a high-end gaming PC designed specifically for producing the best the graphics. What computer you use won’t actually make any difference to how the game looks, because the entire game is streamed to you from the OnLive servers.

You can now play HD games like Assassin's Creed on your MacBook Air, or even your iPad

When you input controls, they are beamed to the server farm, which works out what you want to do and instantly beams back the visual reaction to what you have done, with every part of the computing taking place in the server. All your computer needs is an internet connection and you can play any kind of game you want at the highest quality available. And it works. Exciting, eh?

Now, though, things are getting even more interesting. While you can already play OnLive on your Mac, and buy a wireless controller for the device if you want a more traditional gaming experience, you could previously only observe games if you use the free OnLive app for iPad. Flicking between the games that other users are play and watching their progress live was increidbly impressive, but what we really wanted was to be able to play these games on the iPad, right?

Lego Batman has been updated to include touch controls, and it's free when you download the OnLive Player app. Go get it!

Right – and the OnLive people have finally managed to do it. Check out this video, taken at E3 this year, shows an early demo of Batman: Arkham Asylum being played on an iPad, using a wireless controller. The app will be launching as soon as Apple approve it to the app store, and will include a whole selection of games that are playable with taps and swipes on the screen. At launch, there are three titles with Native Touch controls (one of which is the recent Rockstar title, LA Noire), which have been specifically designed to work with the iPad as if the game was built for Apple’s tablet.

Click here to view the embedded video.

There will be a controller launching for the service very soon (£39.99 and $49.99 in the UK and US respectively) that will allow you to connect not only to your iPad but also to your Mac through bluetooth. You can play around 25 titles using touch controls on your iPad, but connecting a controller will unlock the full library of over 200 games currently available through OnLive. What’s really exciting is the potential here – with a MicroConsole and an iPad, you could display two different views of the same game, which could add a whole new dimension to gaming in the same way that AirPlay mirroring has with Apple TV and some iOS titles.

There’s also some great news for those in the US – OnLive have also been working on the service over 4G LTE networks with AT&T and Verizon, so you can play anywhere. Those who download the free OnLive Player app from the app store when it goes live will get a free copy of Lego Batman to test out the controls, and can test out other games for 30 minutes at no cost. So what are you waiting for – go get it now!

If you’re in the UK, you might also be interested to hear that BT is offering its home broadband customers an exclusive opportunity to get the OnLive PlayPack free for three months when they register online at bt.com/onlive before January 31 2012.

One area that could always do with Time needed: 5 minutes being a little quicker and more precise is the import section that springs to life when you connect a camera or insert an SD card into your Mac. Here, the software can do a couple of things to improve the efficiency not only of the import itself, but also to where in the software those pictures are then stored and displayed. You may need to make these changes each and every time that you import but they will save you a fair bit of time and effort later – whether it’s helping you locate photos faster or saving you having to sort through duplicates or similar shots.

1. Connect and Wait
When you connect a camera or insert an SD card, use the Hide Photos Already Imported button. You can then import all of what remains as one event. Sensible naming of events will help you find photos later.

2: Selected few
Alternatively, you can click on individual photos to highlight them and select so they can be imported separately. This is a good technique if you have lots of similar shots you don’t want to keep.

In this case, we’re going to create the ultimate family newsletter, using the same rules that are applied to newspapers, books and magazines worldwide. Although it will take a bit of practice to define your skills, it’s easy to learn the basics and once you have mastered them, you can apply them to virtually everything that you do from now on, from using grid structures to using typography effectively, this tutorial will help you create much more professional-looking work. Before you start, you may find it helpful to sketch out on paper how you want your newsletter to look, from where each story will go, to where you will place images.

1: Blank template
Open Pages and choose a blank page from the template chooser. First of all, we’re going to create the masthead so head up to the Shape menu.

Unfortunately, without professional equipment, it’s near impossible to make sure that every single clip you record on your video camera or iPhone has similar audio levels.
Luckily, in the latest update Apple has made sure that audio editing is a little simpler and a lot more thorough. You can very easily change the overall levels of a clip by clicking a button and dragging the values up and down. You can also, using the audio editing window, apply changes to the EQ of each clip. EQ allows you to change the values of sounds at different frequencies. This may sound advanced, but it’s really not. In our experience, a little bit of simple exploration can lead to huge improvements in sound quality in just a few clicks.

1: Cogs away
Click the Settings cog on a clip that you would like to adjust the sound on. Then, once the menu bar has appeared, click on Audio Adjustments. This will bring up a dedicated window for you to play with.

2: EQ it
Use the EQ values to select a preset or alter the volume levels of different frequencies. Use trial and error to make adjustments, playing the clip back each time. Over time, you’ll learn what works.

Portable satnav. Mobile internet browser. Digital music player. Digital video camera. With every new software and hardware update, the list of duties that the iPhone can perform continues to grow. The iPhone OS 3.0 update added the Voice Memos app to the standard library of factory-installed apps, enabling us to add dictaphone to the iPhone’s already impressive list of capabilities. Voice Memos allows you to quickly record audio notes, via either your iPhone’s mic or the external mic of a handsfree kit, and store them for easy retrieval. The app’s simple interface is based around an attractive graphic of a classic microphone. Featuring one-touch operation, the notes you record with it can be synced to your iTunes library and shared via email or MMS message. Understandably, this feature can be incredibly useful, so here we present a step-by-step guide to recording and managing voice memos on your iPhone.

We forget that great software is built on files, folders and directories and that our Mac can quickly become clogged with extra elements that aren’t really needed. So we download apps as and when we need them and their baggage adds up, causing problems for the computer to manage everything all the time. Luckily, in most cases not every single file or folder that is associated with an app is totally necessary. Language files are the perfect example. Unless you are likely to wake up fluent in Dutch, you’re probably not going to need the Dutch language files for every app on your system. Multiply these files by the number of languages loaded and the number of apps you have on your machine, and you can see that there would be a lot of redundant information taking up valuable space.
The beauty of CleanMyMac is that it’s designed to hunt out these files and get rid of them for you. Brilliantly, it doesn’t just go ahead and start rampaging through your file directories – its interface guides you through the process so you can see, at every stage, what is happening on your Mac. On top of that, it has some excellent utilities too. They will let you manage your extensions, delete applications and all their associated files, as well as securely erasing files. This app is a great one-stop-shop for keeping on top of files and folders that are just wasting space on your machine. Here we’re going to show how to get started with the CleanMyMac, so you can de-clutter your machine, reclaim some space and improve overall performance.

1: Scanners
First, let CleanMyMac scan your system. You do this by clicking on the Scan button on the bottom-left of the interface. The top bar on the left will then show you the full extent of excess files.

2: Clean it
Take a look at the number of files and you’ll probably be quite shocked, not to mention impressed, by CleanMyMac. Hit the Clean button to start clearing out all the junk you don’t need.

3: Protection
If the files require an administrator password, you’ll be notified. Click on the lock at the bottom of the interface and enter your username and password. You can then continue with the clean.

————————–

Get rid of unwanted apps with ease

Once you’ve had a clear-out, use the utilities to do a little manual spring cleaning. This requires a little more thought, but can be very beneficial to the health of your Mac. The utilities are easy to use, which makes them a valuable part of this application, and you will do well to remember they are ready to be used when you need them.

1. Click on the Uninstall Applications tab on the left and then drag and drop an unwanted app into the blank window on the right. You can do this with more than one app at a time if you like.

2. Use the arrow to view the contents of the app you have dropped into CleanMyMac. You will see that all of the associated files have also been pulled in to be terminated, leaving your Mac free from any leftovers.

3. Hit the Uninstall button when you are ready to get rid of the files. If you were too quick on the trigger, there is a second warning before you lose the files. If you are completely sure you want to continue, hit Uninstall on the left.

————————–

As long as your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as your computer, you can use Remote to control what’s playing on your iTunes library on the Mac upstairs in the bedroom, for example, while you listen to speakers connected to an AirPort Express in the living room. Not content with giving you free rein over your music, the app works equally well with the Apple TV, enabling you to search for movies or TV episodes via the pop-up Qwerty keyboard, pause, fast-forward, rewind; all the usual features you would expect from a regular remote control.
To install the Remote app, just search for ‘Remote’ in the App Store and download and install as normal. We aren’t going to cover everything it can do here, so for now we’ll just illustrate how to set the app up to control your Mac’s iTunes library and you can explore the rest of the app on your own.

Indeed, with such a great tool as the App Store, it is easy to overburden your system with unnecessary software, free games and applications. The problem is that, unlike the average document downloaded from the internet, these software packages can be large and will not only fill your Applications folder, but could also litter your dock and desktop with all manner of shortcuts and preference files.

Recovering free disk space on your system and de-cluttering your environment is an essential part of maintaining a healthy system. This tutorial will help you keep your cool when considering the somewhat daunting and risky task of removing unwanted software from your system.

Step 1: Locate the application
Every software application bought on the App Store is installed in your Applications folder. Open a Finder window and navigate to the software.

Step 2: Is the software running?
For menu bar utilities, use the respective Quit menu item to close. For regular running software, switch to an active window and hit Command+Q.

Step 3: Locate the dock shortcut
With most applications, a dock shortcut is created. Browse through the dock at the bottom of your screen and look for a pictogram of the software.

Step 4: Trash the shortcut
If the shortcut is present, click and hold until the contextual menu appears. Choose Options and then Remove from Dock to remove the shortcut.

Step 5: Trash the application
Return to your Applications folder, click and hold on the software to be deleted and move it on to the Trash icon in the dock. Let go of your click to delete.

Step 6: Are you authorised to do it?
When an App Store purchase is dropped onto the Trash, a dialog box opens, asking you to enter an administrator password. Enter one and click OK.

Step 7: Check your work
Click once on the Trash icon in the dock and the Trash Finder window appears. Check carefully that the application is listed in the contents of the Trash.

Step 8: Empty the trash
With the Trash window still open, start the emptying procedure. Click the Empty button on the right-side of the Trash banner located under the toolbar.

Step 9: A word of warning
In the second step of the removal process, a warning dialog box opens prior to the Trash emptying. Click Empty Trash to delete the software.

Click on the image below to zoom in on the annotations.

Email was overlooked in favour of Facebook integration, as Apple tapped into the growth of the most successful way of sharing ever known. Now, iPhoto ’11 is enticing users back to email by giving them completely customisable layouts, a choice of templates and a range of fonts. The features are easy to use, and will help you make an incredible image to share in just a few minutes.

4: Address and subject
Add an email address and a subject to your message. If you have more than one email account you can choose which one to send it from too.

5: Choose a style
iPhoto includes ten collage templates to help you add a different feel to your photo collections. Choose whichever one suits your style.

6: Send extra photos?
iPhoto will automatically check the option to send the individual photos as a .zip file, but here you can uncheck it, or decide the size of the added photos.

7: Add a title

8: Change the font
There are a lot of fonts and sizes to choose from, and you can align your text from this tab. It also allows you to decrease line spacing, to fit more in.

You can speed up the editing process even more by accessing advanced tools like the dual-mode toolbar. This lets you select and add a clip to the project in one timesaving swipe. iMovie’s advanced tools also enable you to add extra post-production effects like Side by Side (or split screen), and drop in chapter markers for burning the project to disc. You can even replace one background with another. So, here’s how to advance your editing and organising skills…

1: Advanced tools
For iMovie’s advanced tools go to iMovie>Preferences. In the General section tick Show Advanced tools. The toolbar will expand to include new icons.

3: Faster favouriting
You can also favourite clips quicker using the advanced toolbar. Simply click on the Favorite tool icon, then scrub the green-starred icon over the best bits.

4: Hide and seek
Favourited clips will feature a green bar along the top. To show favourited clips (and hide everything else in the Event browser) set Show to Favorites only.

7: Blue screen
To find specific clips click the Keyword icon. Tick to add preset keywords to a clip, or Add to create your own. Drag the cursor across a clip to add the keywords.

DrawRace 2 HD · Chillingo Ltd · iPad · £1.99/$2.99

Simple games are perfect for iOS devices. Angry Birds, Cut the Rope and Infinity Blade all works thanks to a simple swipe system that makes them simple for anyone to play, but incredibly addictive thanks to their clever level design. Well, another of these games has recently been released by Chillingo, and it’s absolutely brilliant.

DrawRace 2 is (as you may have guessed) the sequel to DrawRace 1, but the difference between the two games is absolutely huge. While the first game was a relatively simple, 2D top down racer, the sequel has been fleshed out into a much more rounded product. Now in full 3D, races take place on incredible landscapes of dust, ice and tarmac. The graphics are fantastic too – sure, they’re not as stunning as Dead Space HD in full flow, but the animations are smooth and fast, and the tracks and their surrounds really feel alive with flowing rivers and rubber skid-marks staying on the tracks as you race.

Draw the lines on-screen with your finger to set your car’s path

The controls are just like other successful iOS games – easy to learn, difficult to master. The principle is simple: you draw a line on the race track with your finger and your car will follow it. Draw fast and the car will accelerate, draw slow and it will brake. Skidding slows you down, so keeping in control of your speed is vital to success. You also get a boost that builds up while you’re braking, and using this at the right time can be the difference between success and failure.

Timing your Boost is vital, and cutting corners will cause things like cones to scatter across the track.

There are three main game modes: a Single-player Career Mode, a World League mode that allows you to race against others online, and a mulit-player mode that gives four players the chance to race on the same screen. The Career Mode will keep you occupied for some time, with five classes each containing twelve races . Each race will start with one opponent who you must beat over two laps. You then race the track again with two opponents, then three. You will win a medal for each, and unlock the next class when you’ve won a certain number of medals.

As you power through Career Mode you’ll unlock new cars and tracks

The game is monstrously addictive, and you can’t help diving back in after you’ve been pipped to the post for the eighth time. You curse if you draw a corner just a tiny bit wrong, or when you boost in the wrong place, but because you know it was your own fault you try again to correct your mistake. There is never a feeling that the computer-controlled racers are unbeatable, and it’s this that constantly draws (hur hur) you back in. In fact, we’re issuing you with a warning now: you will not be able to put this game down. And we absolutely love it.

Pros:

+ Fantastically simple controls
+ Beautiful tracks
+ Will last you a long time
+ Single-iPad and online Multiplayer modes

Cons:

- Will suck away your life
- A ‘Single Race’ mode would have been great.

Verdict:
