Apps like Evernote are quickly being updated to use the iPad 2’s camera. Learn how to search photos in your notes in this tutorial

Sometimes things are a little hard to keep track of and so you need to write them down to remember later. If you think using a pen and paper is so last year, Evernote is the app that will help you to electronically track your important thoughts. What’s even better is that it will also utilise the features of Apple’s new iPad 2 in a fantastic way.
Now, after an Evernote update, the camera on the iPad 2 can be used to take snaps to add to notes; photos are stored on the Evernote servers. After a little while your photo will be analysed, and any text that is picked up in the shot will be searchable from within the app. This is undoubtedly one of the most awesome uses of the iPad 2’s camera, as it acts like a scanner and text- recognition software suite in one. However, what is most amazing is that it can actually read your handwriting. Yes, as long as you don’t write in shorthand or have the kind of illegible scrawl that leaves people scratching their heads, Evernote will read your words and allow you look them up quickly. This means that if, one day, you don’t have your iPad with you and have to head into the dark ages with a pen and paper, later on all you need to do is take a quick photo of your page and your note will be just like any other. So how do you do it?

1: Sign in or sign up
Evernote is a free app, and you can get a free account too. If you like, you can subscribe to a Premium account, which will get you a whole host of new features for a monthly or yearly fee.

2: Welcome
When you first log in to Evernote you get a note from the firm explaining just what you can do with the app. One of those things is searching text within photos, which we just had to try out.

3: Create a note
Touching the New Note button (bottom left) scrolls a blank sheet onto the screen. You have options along the top of the page to add a voice recording, a photo from a library, or take a new photo.

4: Snap happy
You’ll want to take a new photo, and when you touch it the iPad camera will activate. If you want to save yourself the hassle of typing up handwritten notes, you can just quickly take a photo of them.

5: A new title
Give your new note a descriptive title. You can add a little text below if you like, and the photo you just took will be added in the box above. Tagging your note will help when sorting, too.

6: Quite a library
Soon enough you’ll have a small collection of notes. With a free account you’re limited to 60MB of storage per month, so if you want to save a lot it might be worth the upgrade.

7: Search
When the images have been processed by the Evernote servers, the text in the pictures will be searchable within the app. A standard search will bring up all mentions of the word in text or photos.

8: Found it!
When you press Search, the app will highlight the relevant text in the note or on photos directly. It will act intelligently too, highlighting longer words such as ‘professionally’ when the search was ‘professional’.

9: Can you read my writing?
What’s most impressive is the handwriting analysis. If you’ve taken a photo including your writing, this will be searchable too, saving you from frantically searching your paper notebook for a single entry.

Console-quality HD games on an iPad, with a wireless controller? Sign us up!

The iPad, and previously the iPhone, have fast become the biggest mobile gaming platform in the world, with millions of people downloading simple apps like Angry Birds to their devices to play on the move. Now, though, there is a new kid on the block, and it’s going to blow Angry Birds out of the metaphorical water.

The OnLive service launched in both the US and UK for Macs and PCs a few months ago, and it has changed the way a lot of people play games completely. The system allows you to play a high-definition game on any machine, whether it’s a £200 netbook running Windows Vista or a high-end gaming PC designed specifically for producing the best the graphics. What computer you use won’t actually make any difference to how the game looks, because the entire game is streamed to you from the OnLive servers.

You can now play HD games like Assassin's Creed on your MacBook Air, or even your iPad

When you input controls, they are beamed to the server farm, which works out what you want to do and instantly beams back the visual reaction to what you have done, with every part of the computing taking place in the server. All your computer needs is an internet connection and you can play any kind of game you want at the highest quality available. And it works. Exciting, eh?

Now, though, things are getting even more interesting. While you can already play OnLive on your Mac, and buy a wireless controller for the device if you want a more traditional gaming experience, you could previously only observe games if you use the free OnLive app for iPad. Flicking between the games that other users are play and watching their progress live was increidbly impressive, but what we really wanted was to be able to play these games on the iPad, right?

Lego Batman has been updated to include touch controls, and it's free when you download the OnLive Player app. Go get it!

Right – and the OnLive people have finally managed to do it. Check out this video, taken at E3 this year, shows an early demo of Batman: Arkham Asylum being played on an iPad, using a wireless controller. The app will be launching as soon as Apple approve it to the app store, and will include a whole selection of games that are playable with taps and swipes on the screen. At launch, there are three titles with Native Touch controls (one of which is the recent Rockstar title, LA Noire), which have been specifically designed to work with the iPad as if the game was built for Apple’s tablet.

Click here to view the embedded video.

There will be a controller launching for the service very soon (£39.99 and $49.99 in the UK and US respectively) that will allow you to connect not only to your iPad but also to your Mac through bluetooth. You can play around 25 titles using touch controls on your iPad, but connecting a controller will unlock the full library of over 200 games currently available through OnLive. What’s really exciting is the potential here – with a MicroConsole and an iPad, you could display two different views of the same game, which could add a whole new dimension to gaming in the same way that AirPlay mirroring has with Apple TV and some iOS titles.

There’s also some great news for those in the US – OnLive have also been working on the service over 4G LTE networks with AT&T and Verizon, so you can play anywhere. Those who download the free OnLive Player app from the app store when it goes live will get a free copy of Lego Batman to test out the controls, and can test out other games for 30 minutes at no cost. So what are you waiting for – go get it now!

If you’re in the UK, you might also be interested to hear that BT is offering its home broadband customers an exclusive opportunity to get the OnLive PlayPack free for three months when they register online at bt.com/onlive before January 31 2012.

This panel-based layout is a terrific template to present your video footage in, as you can make a few clips look much more interesting than they would if you simply cut them together. iMovie’s Comic Book theme pops your clips into comic-style panels, adding an extra level of colour to your productions. The animated, rostrum camera-style transitions add extra movement as they pan from one panel to another. You can even add comic book-style captions to help tell your tale!

1: Create new project
Go to File>New Project. Click the Comic Book theme. Untick Auto add transitions. Click Create. The Themes panel will show comic graphics and titles.

2: Import assets
Choose File>Import>Movies and add clips 01 – 08 from our disc into a new event. Drag the clips from the Event browser into the Project window.

3: Add title graphic

5: Add new credit
Drag Credits 1 onto the second clip. Extend the title to overlap clips 2 and 3. Edit the text field to add the name of your show’s first ‘star’ to the animated title!

6: Title and transitions
From the Transitions browser place Comic Book 3 between clips 3 and 4. Pop a Lower Third 2 title over clip 4 and edit the text to name the co-star.

7: Add comic captions
Use the Comic Book 2 transition to move from the shot of the horse to the bear. Pop an Upper Third over the bear and edit the text. Click Done.

8: Link clips
Insert Comic Book 4 between clips 5 and 6. Extend the Lower Third 1 title over clips 6 and 7. This connects the two clips.

9: Musical finish
The comic book titles and animated transitions are snappy. Add an up-tempo track from the Music browser to help join the clips and graphics together.

Flickr's awesome iPhone app lets you shoot and upload photos and videos while away from the desktop. Here's a quick guide to making the most of it.

The growth of social networking has led to a sharp increase in the popularity of photo sharing over the last few years. Flickr is arguably the most well-known of the services, and this image and video hosting website now hosts more than four billion images. As well as being a popular site for users to share and embed personal snapshots, the service is widely used by bloggers to host images that they embed in blogs and social media.

If you’re a Flickr user, an iPhone app that connects to the site is a natural extension. The official Flickr app lets you do this and a whole lot more. The most notable feature of the app is the ability to upload images to your account. Whether you choose to take a snapshot with your iPhone’s camera or select an existing image from your photo library, uploading is effortless. As a bonus, you can geotag each shot with your current location, add it to a set and assign a level of privacy. iPhone 4 users will be pleased that the app supports HD video uploads and multitasking. This means that your photos will continue to upload in the background while you are performing other tasks.

It’s a tough balance and one that’s been struck by the gorgeously designed Machinarium.

The point-and-click system works well alongside the charming graphics

In this clever Flash-based game you have to take your robot, Josef, from the scrapheap he is dumped on, and make your way into the city to defeat the Black Cap Brotherhood and save your robot girlfriend. It sounds simple enough. The game engine is very clever, working entirely without words. This makes the thought process far more visual from the outset, and the limitations of the puzzle engine actually make the game stronger.

The developers, Amanita Design, conspire to make the point-and-click nature of the puzzles limited to the immediate reach of Josef, so you’ll need to be close to the things you wish to interact with. This prevents futile clicking here, there and everywhere. Should you need it, there is a non-verbal hint and, if you get really stuck, you can always view a level walkthrough… by completing a stunningly hard mini-game. You do get to use props in an inventory, and these can be combined to solve the problems at hand. For instance, in the first level you must combine a rope and a magnet to complete the level.

Overall, this is a really charming game. The animation, scenes and sounds are all very cool and they draw you into the puzzle in a way that’s not too childish, nor too abstract. The most interesting element for us was the lack of words throughout; it really does strike you dumb and send your eyes into overdrive for visual clues that will help unlock each puzzle, piece by piece. For the price you will get your money’s worth of exhilaration and frustration in equal measure. An immersive tale that keeps you thinking from start to finish.

Price: £6.99/$9.99 on the Mac App Store

It’s not all about far-flung places, though, because you can also use it to view your own house and the town you live in, which makes for a somewhat convoluted satellite navigation solution, but one that is sure to give you a more realistic view than any other.

On the iPhone it is very much based around gestures, and knowing these will help you get the most from the app. With many extra features built in, it is worth spending some time exploring them, because this will help you to get even more out of it. It is addictive too, and once you start you may find yourself whizzing around the planet every day. In this tutorial we are going to show you how to make the most of the built-in features, and where the extra bits and pieces are that come together to make it an app all iPhone owners should have loaded on their phones.

1: Load it up
Google Earth is available in the App Store for free. Once you have installed it, tap the app icon and you are ready to start.

2: What to see
Agree for the app to use your current location. Now, tap the ‘i’ icon (bottom-right) and choose what you want to see from the list of options.

3: Zoom in and out
You can zoom in and out by pinching your fingers together. This works well, but you may experience minor lag when viewing the maps over 3G.

4: Tilting
Tilting your iPhone produces an even more impressive effect; it will give you a semi-3D view, which you can scroll around with one finger.

5: Find anywhere
Tap the magnifying glass, top-left, to search. For example, type in ‘New York’ to be taken straight to one of the most famous cities in the world.

6: More information
You will notice small square icons on screen that if tapped will bring up further information. Wikipedia, photos and many other sources are supported.

Some might say that a climatic ending is what makes a good movie. Whether that’s true or not, it’s definitely the part that everybody remembers. Be it a movie, book, piece of music, videogame or, as in our case, a presentation, suspense, pace and drama are crucial to keeping the audience captivated. This common technique of slowly building suspense to culminate in a grand finalé is especially useful when creating presentations, particularly if you are building up to a big announcement. The example that we are using here is the annual financial report for a small business. The big announcement at the end is the net profit, so we’re going to use a combination of animation techniques in order to give it extra importance and to emphasise that this is the highlight of the presentation. Follow these easy steps to learn how.

1: Duplicate slide
Try using Magic Move to create impact. Begin by duplicating what will be the penultimate slide. Control-click and select Duplicate.

2: Resize
Magic Move works best if you resize and rearrange your images. On the duplicated slide, click on the images and drag the corner points to resize.

3: Magic Move
Go back to the previous slide. Open the Slide Inspector and select Transition. From the Effect drop-down menu, select Magic Move.

4: Format text
Type the data onto the last slide and open the Font pallete. Make the text as big and bold as you can for maximum impact.

5: Build
With the box selected, go to the Build Inspector and choose an effect. We’ve chosen Sparkle. Edit the effect by direction, order and duration.

6: Rotation
The data will appear onto the slide one by one with the effect. Once this has completed, add a rotation for extra emphasis. Click on Action and choose an effect.

7: Full circle
Edit the rotation by the direction and degrees. The Order refers to its position within the animation sequence. For more on this, tap on More Options.

8: Build Order
This menu shows a list of your animations. Drag them around to change the order. You can also determine how they are started and the delay between them.

9: Play
Play each animation from within the Inspector palette by clicking on the image, or to view the entire presentation fullscreen click Play.

Portable satnav. Mobile internet browser. Digital music player. Digital video camera. With every new software and hardware update, the list of duties that the iPhone can perform continues to grow. The iPhone OS 3.0 update added the Voice Memos app to the standard library of factory-installed apps, enabling us to add dictaphone to the iPhone’s already impressive list of capabilities. Voice Memos allows you to quickly record audio notes, via either your iPhone’s mic or the external mic of a handsfree kit, and store them for easy retrieval. The app’s simple interface is based around an attractive graphic of a classic microphone. Featuring one-touch operation, the notes you record with it can be synced to your iTunes library and shared via email or MMS message. Understandably, this feature can be incredibly useful, so here we present a step-by-step guide to recording and managing voice memos on your iPhone.

As long as your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as your computer, you can use Remote to control what’s playing on your iTunes library on the Mac upstairs in the bedroom, for example, while you listen to speakers connected to an AirPort Express in the living room. Not content with giving you free rein over your music, the app works equally well with the Apple TV, enabling you to search for movies or TV episodes via the pop-up Qwerty keyboard, pause, fast-forward, rewind; all the usual features you would expect from a regular remote control.
To install the Remote app, just search for ‘Remote’ in the App Store and download and install as normal. We aren’t going to cover everything it can do here, so for now we’ll just illustrate how to set the app up to control your Mac’s iTunes library and you can explore the rest of the app on your own.

While installing new software from the App Store is straightforward, deleting it securely is a little trickier. Fortunately for you, we've had lots of practice! Here's a handy guide to how it's done.

Indeed, with such a great tool as the App Store, it is easy to overburden your system with unnecessary software, free games and applications. The problem is that, unlike the average document downloaded from the internet, these software packages can be large and will not only fill your Applications folder, but could also litter your dock and desktop with all manner of shortcuts and preference files.

Recovering free disk space on your system and de-cluttering your environment is an essential part of maintaining a healthy system. This tutorial will help you keep your cool when considering the somewhat daunting and risky task of removing unwanted software from your system.

Step 1: Locate the application
Every software application bought on the App Store is installed in your Applications folder. Open a Finder window and navigate to the software.

Step 2: Is the software running?
For menu bar utilities, use the respective Quit menu item to close. For regular running software, switch to an active window and hit Command+Q.

Step 3: Locate the dock shortcut
With most applications, a dock shortcut is created. Browse through the dock at the bottom of your screen and look for a pictogram of the software.

Step 4: Trash the shortcut
If the shortcut is present, click and hold until the contextual menu appears. Choose Options and then Remove from Dock to remove the shortcut.

Step 5: Trash the application
Return to your Applications folder, click and hold on the software to be deleted and move it on to the Trash icon in the dock. Let go of your click to delete.

Step 6: Are you authorised to do it?
When an App Store purchase is dropped onto the Trash, a dialog box opens, asking you to enter an administrator password. Enter one and click OK.

Step 7: Check your work
Click once on the Trash icon in the dock and the Trash Finder window appears. Check carefully that the application is listed in the contents of the Trash.

Step 8: Empty the trash
With the Trash window still open, start the emptying procedure. Click the Empty button on the right-side of the Trash banner located under the toolbar.

Email was overlooked in favour of Facebook integration, as Apple tapped into the growth of the most successful way of sharing ever known. Now, iPhoto ’11 is enticing users back to email by giving them completely customisable layouts, a choice of templates and a range of fonts. The features are easy to use, and will help you make an incredible image to share in just a few minutes.

Add an email address and a subject to your message. If you have more than one email account you can choose which one to send it from too.

iPhoto includes ten collage templates to help you add a different feel to your photo collections. Choose whichever one suits your style.

6: Send extra photos?
iPhoto will automatically check the option to send the individual photos as a .zip file, but here you can uncheck it, or decide the size of the added photos.

8: Change the font
There are a lot of fonts and sizes to choose from, and you can align your text from this tab. It also allows you to decrease line spacing, to fit more in.
