Layar is an iPhone 3GS app that’s designed to help you find local points of interest (P.O.I.).

If you’re in strange town and fancy a break, type ‘coffee’ into the search field and hold the iPhone up in front of you.  By using Layar’s Reality View you’ll see the locations of local coffee shops floating over your iPhone’s live video feed. As you pan the iPhone the P.O.I. markers will change position, so you can work out which direction to head in.

In practice the Reality Browser isn’t always that accurate, and could be considered a bit of a gimmick. However by switching to the much more useful Map view you can see all the local points of interest pin-pointed on a Google map. As your own location is also marked on the map it’s much easier to navigate to your chosen destination.  There’s also useful List view that lets you look up online reviews, so you can make an informed choice before you set off. A practical and informative app.

Mac’s new innovation will soon gain some steam after this initial push period during it’s launch. The lack of keyboard and Mac’s potential to fix hardware will begin to make the product a monster in time.
