Over the holiday period, a number of analysts weighed in on the topic of the next iPhone. Already being dubbed the ‘iPhone 5S’, rumours about the new model have already suggested that we should expect a launch of the phone in May or June of 2013. This would place the announcement during or around WWDC, which is traditionally held at the start of June each year. Historically, this was the place that Apple launched the iPhone, with every model from the original device to the iPhone 4 seeing a summer release; it was only the 4S and the 5 that changed this.
We reported last month on analyst Peter Misek’s suggestions that the iPhone could be released in multiple colours, but since then more reports have surfaced from Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White to back up the claims. White claims that Apple will offer more options in both colour and screen size:
“Our checks indicate that the next iPhone will have more choices for customers,” the analyst wrote. “This entails an expansion in both the color patterns and screen sizes with the next iPhone (i.e., likely called the iPhone 5S) that we currently believe will be launched in May/June with certain supply production starting in March/April.”
White had more to say on the screen sizes of the next iPhone:
“Our checks are also indicating that the next iPhone will offer customers more choice in terms of screen size,” White reported. “Although Apple offers a 4-inch screen on the iPhone 5 and a 3.5-inch screen on the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, the Company has never offered multiple screen sizes for a single model. We believe this is about to change with the next iPhone offering different screen sizes that we believe will allow Apple to better bifurcate the market and expand its reach.”
While Apple has recently started offering its iPod touch range in numerous colours, this would mark the first time the company has ventured into the iPhone market with coloured handsets. It would also be the first time that the iPhone was offered in multiple sizes – Apple currently sells both the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5, giving customers a choice, but it is hard to believe that Apple would make two new devices with different screens after they have so recently promoted the larger screen of the iPhone 5.
