Is this the back of the next-generation iPad 5?

by Stephen Ashby

These could be the first leaked photos of the next-generation iPad 5, and if they’re right it’s looking a whole lot like an iPad mini…

9to5Mac has posted photos of what it believes is the rear casing for the next-generation iPad. The casing, pictured above, looks very similar to that of the iPad mini, with the same curved edge and anodised black aluminium colouring. From the photos it’s also possible to see that the two cases are quite similar in terms of thickness, implying that the next iPad will be almost as thin as the mini.

This casing shows a design that is almost identical to that of the iPad mini, but with the same 9.7-inch screen as the current iPad 4

MacRumours went one step further, overlaying a photo of a current-gen iPad and comparing the size:

The photo isn't the best, with some issues with distortion that makes the iPad 4 look larger than it should – take this with a pinch of salt

One user on the MacRumours forums, named Diwali, created a mockup of the approximate appearance of the iPad 5 based on these comparisons (shown right).

There have already been several rumours surrounding upcoming iPads, and earlier this month a 3D designer called Martin Hajek mocked up a next-gen iPad with a design similar to the iPad mini, and now evidence seems to be stacking up.

Yesterday’s rumours of a 128GB iPad turned out to be correct, and the result may be that this thinner iPad 5 won’t be released for several months. The new 128GB iPad suggests that Apple are simply issuing a small update to their current lineup, before refreshing the hardware with a new, redesigned version later in the year.
