I Want One of These: Mobee Magic Numpad

by Stephen Ashby

Another simple, elegant solution to a problem you didn’t even realise you had…

Mobee haven’t been around for long, but they already have made themselves a reputation for making incredible solutions to problems that people have while using a Mac. Now, the people that brought you the Magic Bar and Magic Charger have done it again with a brilliant and simple way to squeeze a little more functionality out of your Magic Trackpad with the The Magic Numpad.

I Want One of These: Mobee Magic NumpadThe idea itself is relatively simple, and takes advantage of the hugely responsive surface of Apple’s multi-touch Trackpad to register taps in certain areas. The Magic Numpad’s box contains a CD containing software that will read where you’re touching the Trackpad and translate these taps into numbers, like a tradition number pad.

I Want One of These: Mobee Magic NumpadThe removable films mean you can try out all three if you want

But the reason this product is so clever is that it uses the full adaptabilty of the Trackpad to brilliant effect; the box also contains three different films that stick to the top of your Trackpad, each with a different layout. These films can be removed easily if you want to try a different option, so you’re not limited to one forever. Naturally, the software also contains options for each of these set-ups, allowing you to quickly type, use the Trackpad as was intended by Apple, or a combination of the two.

The Magic Numpad is available now for €29.90 (around £26/$40), but won’t ship until October. We’re going to try our best to get our hands on one of these as soon as we can, so check out future issues of iCreate Magazine for a full review.

I hate to burst the bubble on this story but we are building a Mac App using the technology from our app called Signature. We are a week or two away from completing the app. We are building it in such away that no stick on film is required. We invested a lot of misery and sweet in Signature and iLifeTouch needs to build additional products to recover the development effort. We have not encountered any new issues during the build so we are hoping things continue to go smooth.

      Hi Jeff,

Thanks for getting in touch, that app sounds ace! We’d love to try it out if you would be willing to let us?

The Magic Numpad sounds a little different than what you’ve created – this one is more of a Number pad that you can type on, using your Magic Trackpad as the numpad that Apple’s keyboards no longer include, whereas yours seems to be a solution of signing documents on your Mac. Both sounds fantastic, and I hope the development finishes successfully! Let us know when you’re done and we’d happily review the app :)
