According to a report by Nikkei, Google’s Nexus 7 outsold Apple’s iPad in Japan during the holiday season. A survey, which looked at 2,400 electronics stores across the country, found that the Nexus 7 took 44.4% of the market share in December, with Apple’s iPad just behind at 40%.
With a 16GB flavour of the Nexus 7 costing around $100 less than an iPad mini of the same capacity, price was reported to be the main reason for the difference in sales. A short supply of the iPad mini after its launch was also a contributing factor.
Apple may have lost the holiday season battle, but they’re still on for winning the war, with the survey noting that the iPad being Japan’s tablet of choice since 2010.
Homegrown companies like Sony and Fujitsu only gained a two to three per cent market share throughout the holiday season.
