Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5: tech specs compared

by Stephen Ashby

Is Samsung’s new flagship Galaxy S4 an Apple-beater, or does the iPhone still hold its own?

Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5: tech specs compared
At 7pm in New York, Samsung announced the new Galaxy S4, a smartphone that Samsung hopes will rival the iPhone 5.
The Korean company has released specifications for the new phone, so we’ve compared it directly to the iPhone 5. Remember, these specifications are simply an on-paper comparison, and performance will be different in real-life tests. Still, the S4 really is a powerhouse:

As you can see, there are plenty of areas in which the S4 trumps the iPhone 5. That is, of course, to be expected – the S4 is brand new, while the iPhone 5 has been on sale for almost than six months. It will be really interesting to get some hands-on time with the S4 and see how it compares in everyday use. What’s worth noting, however, is that the device is getting mixed reviews based on the short hands-on period given to journalists at the event. While many are praising the power boost, others are less impressed:

Gizmodo:

“There has been a ton of hype and build-up to this device, and ultimately, it left us feeling cold. The S IV feels uninspired. There are small spec bumps from the previous generation and there’s a ton of software which will largely sit unused. There’s just no wow-factor here.”

Whatever you think of Android, one thing is for sure – Apple will be working hard to come up with an S4-beater in the iPhone 5S.

* It’s worth noting that the Exynos processor inside the S4 is technically eight-core, but doesn’t use all the cores at once. In fact it contains four high-speed ARM Cortex-15 cores that will provide fast performance, as well as four ARM Cortex-A7 cores for improved battery life when required. Only four cores will be used at any time, but the processor is dubbed eight-core because it has… well, eight cores.

** The battery in the S4 is considerably larger than that of the iPhone 5, but with a 5-inch screen and a 1080p display (that’s a lot of pixels to power) it’s likely that the battery won’t last a huge amount longer than the iPhone. Sadly we won’t know until there are some proper hands-on tests.
