Q. I have a new iPhone and I’ve recently loaded Apple’s Remote iPhone application onto it to control my iTunes library. I followed the steps to add a new library on the iPhone and entered the password successfully in iTunes, but when I try to connect to it, it just tells me that it could not connect to iTunes. Any clues as to what I may have done wrong?
A. We don’t think this is a problem with your router – Remote needs to be on the same local network as iTunes to control it, but as you’ve been able to pair successfully, it clearly is already. If you hadn’t paired successfully, we’d also have checked that in iTunes Preferences, under the Devices section, you still have ‘Look for iPhone and iPod touch Remotes’ enabled (this should be on by default). If your Firewall is active, check that it isn’t blocking communication between the program and iTunes. Remote uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with iTunes, so you may need to configure your Firewall to add these ports. But if you’re using Mac OS X 10.5, all you need to do is go to the Security pane of System Preferences and check that the Firewall is not set to Allow Only Essential Services. If that doesn’t work there is a simpler alternative, which we’ve used successfully in the past. Just delete the application and re-install it. Sometimes the simplest tricks are the best!
