iOS 7 Mac icon project: Maps

Another system icon today, and one that was a lot of fun to make. Maps is actually a pretty straightforward design at first glance, with the iOS 7 version offering a flat design compared to the angled OS X version. But the several different layer colours, the gentle lines around the roads on the map, and the interstate shield was just unique enough that I had to draw it from scratch.

I’m pretty happy with the result. I took colours from both the iOS 7 and OS X versions, but focused mainly on emulating the iOS logo. The biggest challenge was working out how to ‘frame’ the map. In the iOS 7 logo, the map simply bleeds to the edge of the curved app icon shape, and on OS X it’s framed by a white, shadowed square. I didn’t want to add shadow as it would create too much depth, so in the end I opted for a simple white square that hopefully gives the impression of a border around a paper map.

Grab the icon from below, and remember, too, that you can now use the LiteIcon 3.0 beta to apply all your icons quickly and easily. Find out more about it here, and grab it from here. Remember, you can apply all your icons, but the changes won’t take effect until you restart your Dock. Open Terminal, type ‘killall Dock’ (without the inverted commas) and hit Enter once you’ve hit Apply and the Dock will slide in again with the new icons applied.
