Hi there

You don't necessarily need protection, but it's a good idea to have something on there for peace of mind. I use a thin film protector on my iPhone screen which bears the brunt of any scratches and is easily replaceable, though luckily after more than a year the original film is still on there. The one I have cost about a tenner and also cuts down glare, making the screen easier to read in direct sunlight. Coupled with an ultra-slim silicone form-fitting case from Incase, this gives me the confidence to let my three-year old play games on the phone - any mucky fingermarks just wipe clean off.
Another bonus is that the phone is also still in as-new condition underneath all this, which is great should I ever decide to sell it.
So there you go - not essential, but highly recommended. Hope that helps...
