Keep your guard up by changing your password on a regular basis to keep your Mac safe and secure. Here's how to do it in two simple steps.

One of the most basic things you can do to protect yourself on a regular basis is to change your password. This means that anyone spying on your Mac or using it regularly that may aim to make changes or steal information using your password will no longer be able to do so. Changing your password is a simple affair and can be done at any time. You do, of course, need to pick new passwords that mean something to you and that you can easily remember. You don’t want to lock yourself out of your machine. The process itself is so simple that we can tell you in just two clear steps, which makes it inversely proportional to just how much safer this can make your machine.

Step 1: Preferences

Load your System Preferences from your Dock or from the Apple menu and then click on the Accounts button in the System section. Then, with your account selected hit the Change Password button.

Step 2: Keep it catchy

Now enter your old password followed by the new one twice. Remember to use the reminder tip as this could save you all kinds of hassle down the line. When you’re done click Change Password.

If this could be the case in your family, it’s time to start thinking about setting up Parental Controls on your Mac.

What you can do with these controls is surprisingly detailed – if you simply want to limit the webpages that your kids can access, you can add a list of allowable sites and nothing more. But you also have the ability to control how long they are allowed to use the computer for each day, set limits on specific applications that they can use and monitor what they do when they’re on the Mac. The idea is that you can let your children have what they think is a free reign on your Mac while keeping them safe.

You should now see a list of all the users of your machine on the left-side of the window. Choose the right name and click Enable Parental Controls.

Although the ready-made templates in Pages are stylish and beautifully designed, occasionally you may want to break away from the restrictions of using them and instead create your own bespoke design, particularly if you want something to accurately reflect the nature of your business. If you don’t feel confident designing something from scratch, have a look at some of the Apple templates or other examples, to get some inspiration and to get a rough idea of what you like and don’t like. You could even try sketching something out on paper first (something that many graphic designers still do). This tutorial will show you how to create an invoice from a blank page, using a little bit of originality and creativity combined with borrowing a little bit from a pre-made template and adapting it to suit your own design.

Step 1: Open and select

Open Pages and select a blank page. If you’re stuck for ideas, try scanning through the pre-made templates for inspiration.

Step 2: Drag and drop

Our invoice is for a photographer, so we want to make it more image led. Drag images from the media panel and drop them onto your template.

Step 3: Using guides

Use the blue guides to align images; drag the corner points to resize. You don’t need to hold the Shift key down as you might do in other software.

Step 4: Shapes

You can use the Shapes drop-down menu at the top of the interface to add graphic elements to your Pages template.

Step 5: Format

Use the Inspector palette or the format bar at the top of the interface to style your graphic elements, including colour, stroke and opacity.

Step 6: Adding text

Click on the Text box to add text. Type it in, then use the Fonts panel (indicated by the ‘A’ icon) or the format bar to style the text exactly as you want.

Step 7: Template Chooser

We’ll steal the data table from another template. In the File menu, select ‘New from Template Chooser’. Select an invoice that most suits your design.

Step 8: Select all

Once the chosen template has opened, go to the Edit drop-down menu and choose Select All or use the keyboard shortcut Command+A.

Beds can be used to convey the mood of a specific part of a podcast, or set the pace of the episode as a whole. While not every podcast has or needs a bed, your one may well benefit from one, so it’s useful to make your own and try them out to see what works. Making your own podcast beds in GarageBand is fairly easy, especially considering the number of pre-loaded loops and tracks that it has to offer, so fire it up and follow these simple steps to make your podcast that little bit better.

Step 1: Pick a project

Create a new project and choose Loops from the template selection. This brings up the loops browser and a clear track window to drop them into.

Step 2: Find a theme

GarageBand’s loops browser allows you to view loops by instrument, genre or mood. Click on the search item to choose from hundreds of great loops.

Step 3: Click and preview

Click on the icon next to the loop name to preview it prior to dragging it into the track view. This is useful when you have a lot of loops in your project.

Step 4: Drag it over

Once you’ve found a loop or sample you’re happy with (the longer the better), drag it into the track view. GarageBand will automatically create a new track for it.

Step 5: Up close and personal

Drag the slide on the bottom-left of GarageBand’s window to zoom in towards the end of the loop or sample and find the final note.

Step 6: Cut the loop

Drag the playhead to the point in the loop just before the last note, then choose Split from the Edit menu to separate the two parts ready to create a loop.

Step 7: Copy and paste

Copy the first part of the split loop; this will form the looped section that will play throughout your bed. Paste that back in but don’t overwrite the second part.

Step 8: Repeat the paste

While making sure that the second part of the split loop is clear of where you’re pasting, paste in the first part of your loop repeatedly until your bed is the right length.

Step 9: Joining up

Highlight all of the repeated sections (including the second part of the original split clip) and join them using the Join command in the Edit menu to finish up.

Click on the image below to zoom in and view the annotations.

Behind every great action movie is a great score – the continuous music that weaves itself in and out of the film to build tension, create drama and help immerse the audience in the action. If you’re thinking about filming your own action movie you’ll want to record a score to go with it. There’s a few common themes, or conventions, that underpin every action movie score such as crescendos (where the music gets louder), orchestral hits, long string parts and high-tempo parts in fast-paced scenes. Using GarageBand’s built-in instruments, loops and effects, emulating all these things is easy and we’ll show you how to create an action movie score to rival those in Hollywood blockbusters.

Step 1: Up the tempo

Create a new project and when you’re presented with the ‘New Project from Template’ dialogue box, move the tempo slide up to about 150bpm.

Step 2: Stringing along

To start with a dramatic intro, create a new software instrument and select Hollywood Strings or Orchestral Strings from the Strings category for your first track.

Step 3: Add some drones

Record a low-end string drone. The easiest way to do this is with musical typing (which uses your Mac’s keyboard as the input) from the Window menu.

Step 4: Fade it in

Click the arrow button by the track volume to bring up its automation functions and create a slow fade-in for your strings. This will create a tense opening.

Step 5: Add more audio

Open up the loops browser and select Cinematic to find some appropriate loops. The ‘Super Stager’ loop starts with a dramatic hit which works well.

Step 6: Layer your loops

As the tension builds in an action film, more and more elements are heard within its score. Reflect this in your soundtrack by layering similar loops for dramatic effect.

Step 7: Create a cross-fade

Although layering is a good idea, sometimes loops can clash. You can solve this issue by cross-fading loops using automation so they’re clearer.

Step 8: Add some ‘atmos’

‘Atmos’ refers to everyday sounds you might hear in a scene. Try adding a helicopter sample and use automation to pan it from left to right.

Step 9: Repeat and re-use

Add as many different ‘atmos’ samples and loops in as you like, even repeat some to build up your audible story; it all adds to the dramatic effect of your score.

Click on the image below to zoom in and view the annotations.

If you come up against iCloud’s free 5GB storage limit, there are a few ways you can slim down on the space you use. The obvious answer is to get rid of any unwanted data, but we’ve detailed a few obscure options below. Your final option is to buy more space.

1: Do you really need that file?

It’s an obvious one, but a quick clear out of unnecessary iWork documents can really free up a substantial amount of space.

2: Trash the trash, delete the sent

Head into your iCloud Mail account and empty your trash – a full can of emails and attachments will eat up space fast.

3: Lose your old iOS back-ups

In iCloud’s System Preferences, tap the Manage button and check out your device back-ups – lose the old to free up space.

4: Assess your app back-ups

On your iOS device, head into the Settings app, then iCloud to manage which apps are backed up. Bigger apps will hog the space!

5: Perform an iPhone spring clean

Having a clear out of your iDevice’s apps, music, notes and other items can really help to slim down your back-ups.

6: Buy more space!

As a last resort, you can always buy more iCloud space. This can be done from your iOS device or Mac, and it’s great value.

Here you need to log in and then access your account information. From here you can reset the stream. Apple has made the OFF switch online so that you can access the controls from anywhere. So if your iPhone, iPad or Mac is stolen, you can wipe the personal information in the stream using this reset technique. In order to have the change filter through to your hand-helds, you’ll need to turn the stream off in their settings, too.

Step 1: Visit the cloud

Navigate to www.iCloud.com, enter your username and password, and then click on your name at the top of the browser. That will bring up this screen. Click on Advanced.

Step 2: Are you sure?

As with all permanent moves on a computer, you will be prompted to make sure that you are sure you want to proceed. Click OK and then wait while your snaps get deleted.

Photo Stream is an excellent concept, letting users share and back up their latest and greatest photographs with little to no effort. The system is based on iCloud, so you will need to have OS X Lion 10.7.2 and iOS 5 set up and running on your Mac and iOS device respectively. With the updates added and iCloud already set up, all you need to do is enable Photo Stream and the system will begin to collect your most recently taken shots on your iPhone. They then become instantly visible on your iPad and Mac (as long as you are connected to Wi-Fi). There are a couple of conditions attached to Photo Stream, which is to be expected in a free service. The limits imposed on storage are up to 1,000 pictures or 30 days’ worth of images. If you reach either of these limits then any photos taken or stored afterwards will replace the earlier ones added. So, as a backup, you have a limit but as a sharing service you always have the most recent pictures. Photo Stream is wonderful because you will never need to connect your iPhone to iPhoto again, as they are automatically saved in a new event. Similarly, you need never load pictures onto your iPad again.

Step 1: System Preferences

If you have already set up iCloud, you’ll come straight to this screen after clicking the iCloud icon from your System Preferences. All you need to do is enable the service by clicking the tick box in the options provided.

Step 2: iPhoto

You will need to make sure iPhoto is up to date. If it is, you will see this page when you click Photo Stream on the left-hand side of the interface. Click Turn On Photo Stream and it will begin to populate.

Step 3: Pictures galore

All of the pictures you have taken in the last 30 days will begin to fill the interface in iPhoto. You can view these as you would any other photos. Drag them into Pictures to save and keep them locally.

Step 4: Add pictures

If you want to add pictures to Photo Stream from your iPhoto library, just click on the image, hit the Share button (in the bottom-right) then click on the Photo Stream option. It’s as simple as that.

Because of the ecosystem that exists, and the dual formats of iWork over the Mac and iOS platforms, iCloud neatly ties the two together so you can easily back up and share documents between the two. The process is actually automatic but you will need the latest version of each piece of software in order to make the system work. A Software Update on your Mac will sort this, as will making sure you are up to date on your iOS device. With all of your updates completed, you will find updating and amending iWork documents across platforms a breeze, so you can always be up to date and working on the latest version.

Step 1: System Preferences

In the System Preferences section you should see iCloud in the bottom-left. If it’s not there, choose Software Update and scan for a new version of OS X.

Step 2: Getting an ID

Click Create an Apple ID underneath the text box to make a new ID. You’ll need to input some information for security purposes in case you lose your password.

Step 3: Pick me!

You’ll have the choice between using an existing email address or signing up to an @me.com email address. You’ll have to choose something unique, so test it here.

Step 4: Like no one else

If your chosen address isn’t already taken, you can input the rest of your details, as well as a security question to help with password retrieval, if necessary.

Step 5: Password limits

Your password must be at least eight characters and contain an upper and lower-case letter, as well as a number. You can change this later with no restrictions.

Step 6: Other services

iCloud also provides other services for you to use, such as the ability to sync your data to the cloud, and to track your Mac if it’s lost or stolen.

Step 7: iConnected

Once you’ve agreed to the Licensing Agreement, you should see this screen. You can customise iCloud settings immediately or click Done to carry on.

Step 8: Customising

If you click Customize, or select iCloud from System Preferences, this screen will appear. Ensure the top option, Mail & Notes, is turned on, then open up Mail.

Step 9: Mail preferences

Choose Mail>Preferences, then Accounts to check your info. You can edit your data here, but it will pull everything you put into iCloud anyway.
