This Kickstarter project aims to bring high-quality gaming to your iOS device

Hope is the game's protagonist

Games are now a huge part of the iPhone and iPad revolution. However, while there have been literally tens of thousands of 69p/$0.99 games for sale in the app store, more expensive games that offer a greater amount of content and a larger game world are few and far between. Some argue that iOS devices will only ever be a place to play ‘casual’ games that can be picked up and thrown away quickly, but the newly formed Camouflaj studio disagrees.

They’re developing a game called Republique that offers a high-res, high quality gaming experience on your iPhone or iPad. The developers, who have worked on console franchises like F.E.A.R., Metal Gear Solid and Halo, have now set out to create an iOS game from scratch that rivals the console exprience. The game starts with your iPhone ‘ringing’, and a scared woman starting a video chat with you. After that you have to help the woman escape her captors, using your phone to hack into various cameras and machines to aid her in her plight.

Currently, the team have an incredible Proof of Concept video, which we’ve included below, and some amazing ideas. The game looks fantastic, utilising motion-capture technology and high-quality voice acting to ensure that you get a full gaming experience. It’s backed by Logan, the team that produced and directed the console smash hit Skyrim: Elder Scrolls. However, without the help of the paying community, the game won’t see the light of day.

The game is currently a Kickstarter Project which you can back to help it to full production. It’s aiming high, but there’s plenty of time for it to achieve it’s funding goal. You can back it on their Kickstarter page if you like the look of the game. We think the ideas behind this game are fantastic, and we’d love to see it hit it’s goal. If you agree back them and get a copy for free when it launches.

This extendable USB cable for iPhone and iPad is sure to make your life a lot easier...

How many times can you remember where you’ve been using your iPad or iPhone and it’s been in desperate need of charging? And how many of those times did you want to carry on using your device, but not been able to because of how short the charging cable is that comes in the box? If you’re anything like us the answer to those two questions will be ‘lots’.

Now, though, it looks like a solution is on the horizon. The Curly Cable is, as you might expect, a cable that is curly. This means that while it is incredibly portable and easy to store, it also has the ability to extend to a length of 240 cm. That is more than twice the length of a standard white 30-pin cable that comes in the box with iOS devices, and it means that you can easily plug it in and carry on using your device while charging.

The Kickstarter project for this idea has not only hit it’s target of $1,500, it’s blown it so far out of the water that the target looks like a tiny speck on the horizon. Currently, with three days left of the project’s funding, the total stands at a staggering $24,000, which could have funded the project 16 times over. Looks like a lot of people have a problem, then.

This isn’t the first cable of it’s kind, but we’re hoping that it will turn out to be one of the easiest to get hold of. Check back some time next month and hopefully the Curly Cable developers will have started their manufacturing process.

You can currently still back the project; $15 will get you a Curly Cable when they are finished, along with lots of other offers depending on how much you are willing pledge. Head over to the Kickstarter page for more information

Kick your new year off in style with some excellent apps...

It’s that time again, where we all decide after eating and drinking way too much, that this is the year we do things properly, that this is the year we get our lives in order. We here at iCreate are having exactly the same thoughts and So I have decided to share some my favourite Mac, iPhone and iPad apps for doing just that with you. Here are my top productivity, health and fitness and general ‘new start’ apps for 2012.

Productivity Mac apps

For me, at least, the new year provides an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and make good on all of those ideas that surfaced in the previous year but that you never got around to getting started. I always find that a great app can add a huge amount to your creative process, allowing you to plan more effectively and execute those plans in a more timely fashion – whats more a great app invites you to use it again and again adding an element of interest to tasks that might usually put you off. My first pick is a note taking and todo app that will help you get all of the ideas you have on a daily basis down and organised in a really cool, minimal, Apple kind of way. Its called Thoughts (click here for the website) and it is available from the Mac App Store (click here). The reason I like this app so much is that it lets me organise my thoughts into books. So I can easily separate my work projects from my home projects and my serious ideas from the slightly more wacky ones. The interface is really clean but when you need it, all of the formatting options you’d expect from a great app are at your disposal. This is a really well considered and brilliantly executed app.

My next productivity app is actually two apps that I use in tandem. They are both iCal add-ons in as much as they prevent me from ever having to open it. It’s not that I really dislike iCal, it’s just that its a pain and it gets in my way . These two apps make the pain go away. The first is called Blotter (website here, Mac App Store link here) and it basically throws your iCal info onto a transparent viewer that lives on your desktop. So iCal is always there – without you having to load it. The app that works perfectly with this is called QuickCal(web here , App Store here) and it is beautiful. Launch a tiny window from your menu bar at any time and then type an event or meeting name in normal English like ‘meeting tomorrow at 2pm with Jon’ and it will figure out the details and add them to iCal. For more specific elements just type ‘to-do’ or ’all-day’ and the app will figure it out. If you are like me and you love the idea of being organised but don’t want to load iCal and bugger about with a million options to do so, then (while we wait for Apple to bring Siri to the desktop) use these two wonderfully crafted apps and get your life in order in just a few clicks.

Getting healthy with iOS

For some reason, because of the ‘always there’ nature of the iPhone, it seems to be considered an incredibly useful tool for helping people stay healthy or get fit. There are literally thousands of apps out there that profess to help you do it but sadly none of them can actually make you eat less or exercise more. So, you need to find an app that will keep you interested enough to keep going back and keep being reminded of your goals. Fortunately in my years of writing app reviews for iCreate and for various related bookazines, I have experienced a vast number of health and fitness apps and I can say that the best ones are the ones that appeal to your geeky nature. iMapMyRun is the perfect example (link), offering you the ability to track where you jog or cycle on a map and offering some cool additional information like the pace you are going at and connectivity to some other third-party monitors. The upshot of all this wizadry is that you can set yourself goals based on more than just distance and you can become a statistician for your own progress – which makes the whole endeavour much more enjoyable.

Stay creative

When it comes to the iPad, there isn’t much it can help with exercise-wise (in the same way that the iPhone can – you could try strapping it to your bike I suppose?) but it can help keep your creative juices flowing and healthy, keeping those all important ideas bubbling at the surface. The reason for its success in this department is simple, it has a much more usable interface compared with an iPhone and it has portability advantages over a laptop. So, for me at least, the iPad is the perfect way to have a dabble at making something cool, which in turn fuels all kinds of fires for projects at work and at home. The app I’m most into at the moment and the one I’m recommending is called Snapseed (link). It’s an image editor that lets you add all kinds of new dimensions to your snaps. What I like most about it is the way that each of the effects can be dialled up or down and the way that different combinations of effects can be added in different measures to incredibly varying effect. Its one of those apps that can take a seemingly ordinary image and turn into something incredible and it has enough features to ensure that no picture ends up looking the same. If you are into image manipulation at all, or have ever fancied it, then this app is perfect. Beginners and pros can get something from it.

So, there you have it, a quick guide to my favourite apps for the new year. If you want to add your own to the list please do so in the comments. If there are any we haven’t featured in the magazine we will do our upmost to get them in there. Check back soon for some favourite hardware for the new year too.

Dropbox is a free service that lets you share photos, docs and videos wirelessly via the internet. Use the software for personal sharing with friends and family, or commercially at work as you transfer files for review and approval. This app is so easy to use and so universal that it may well become an essential part of your daily sharing routine. With an initial 2GB worth of free storage memory (additional $9.99 for 50GB, $19.99 for 100GB), the Dropbox app’s most notable function is the ability to host your files across desktop and mobile devices simultaneously. This app is, as we’ve mentioned, very simple (that’s the true beauty of it), letting you perform a number of upload and share operations. Some of our favourites include its ability to synchronise with other image- hosting apps – PSD Viewer, for example – and also its direct Email Link option. Here’s a quick rundown on how to perform functions inside this app.

Step 1: Image uploads
Uploading an image is simple. Load the Dropbox app, tap the Uploads option, select your folder, tap your image(s) and the Upload button.

Step 2: Share image links
You can instantly share your uploaded images or anything else in your Dropbox folders by tapping the ‘+’ icon and selecting Email Link.

Step 3: Making favourites
Your Dropbox folder library may fill up fast, so the interface lets you designate images as favourites. Simply click on the star icon in the interface.

Step 4: App syncing
Multitask in Dropbox with third-party app syncing. Compatible apps are instantly recognised and presented as options – in this case the free app PSD Viewer Lite.

Flickr's awesome iPhone app lets you shoot and upload photos and videos while away from the desktop. Here's a quick guide to making the most of it.

The growth of social networking has led to a sharp increase in the popularity of photo sharing over the last few years. Flickr is arguably the most well-known of the services, and this image and video hosting website now hosts more than four billion images. As well as being a popular site for users to share and embed personal snapshots, the service is widely used by bloggers to host images that they embed in blogs and social media.

If you’re a Flickr user, an iPhone app that connects to the site is a natural extension. The official Flickr app lets you do this and a whole lot more. The most notable feature of the app is the ability to upload images to your account. Whether you choose to take a snapshot with your iPhone’s camera or select an existing image from your photo library, uploading is effortless. As a bonus, you can geotag each shot with your current location, add it to a set and assign a level of privacy. iPhone 4 users will be pleased that the app supports HD video uploads and multitasking. This means that your photos will continue to upload in the background while you are performing other tasks.

Step 1: Flickr
Download and install the Flickr app; when you open it, you will see a slideshow that displays images from the site. Now log in to your account.

Step 2: Sign in
Tap on Recent, You or Contacts and you’ll go to a one-time authorisation that opens in Safari. Sign in using your Yahoo! ID username and password.

Step 4: Upload
Now upload an image: tap the upload icon (top-right) and select Upload from Library. Browse until you find an image and enter a name.

Step 5: Geotag
You can geotag your image by enabling Tag Current Location. Do this and select a privacy level. Tap Upload and it will be uploaded to your account.

Step 6: View image
Tap You to view your collection of photos and you will now see the latest snapshot. You can add a comment, assign it to a set or share it via email.

When we remembered this piece last week, we couldn’t remember exactly what we’d written, so we flicked back to find out what we’d said, and were amazed by how closely we’d predicted what turned out to be Siri. Included below is just a small part of the larger article – the part where we detail the features we’d like to see in a Voice Recognition system. Not all of them have made their way to Siri yet, but the point still stands; here are a list of features we’d love to see included in the software over the next few months, while it’s still in beta.
Anyway, take a look at the first page of the article to the right (you can click it to make it a little larger) and then cast your eyes over our biggest desires for the future of Siri. Then sit back and marvel at our incredible foresight.

Scotsman Andrew Watson shares his thoughts on the recently-publicised fact that Siri has trouble understanding those with strong regional accents in the UK...

No, I don’t talk like this in real life; but even my modified, as-posh-as-I-can voice would apparently cause problems for Apple’s latest application.

The new iPhone 4S, and its ‘Siri’ feature, which allows users to take down diary commitments, text messages and more using voice-recognition, has posed many problems for Apple fans north of the border here in the UK.

Such questions as “Can you dance with me?” (why on Earth would someone ask an inanimate object such a question?!) are translated, laughably, as “Can you Dutch women?”. Also, when booking 12 o’clock appointments, Scots have been told, and I’m sure left dumbfounded by the fact, that Siri doesn’t understand this “treblecock” business, either!

The crux of this story, however, is that Apple had marketed this fancy new gadget as being able to ‘recognise the specific accents and dialects of the supported countries listed [UK English, US English and AUS English]’.

I’m in two worlds about the issues brought up by such problems. I can’t decide if learning how to speak ‘properly’(!) is the most sensible solution; or if that those with that sense of ‘never forgetting where they came from’ (of which there are many), should lobby Apple to do their homework on such an island as diverse as the Great British Isles. It may be a small place, but the variety of dialects here were probably far too disconcerting, and time-consuming, for Apple to bother about it.

This general point of modifying your accent is the issue that attracts me most to this nice little piece, originally in The Independent, because it’s a rather thorny topic that usually draws in class warriors from all corners of the UK – as well as academic linguist-types. The BBC’s Andrew Marr modified his accent to be better understood by the general British public, as did Gordon Brown, so why can’t the rest of us proles do the same?

Principles, people. Principles. These people, in the eyes of the many, have sold their souls for wider acceptance and, in the eyes of cynics, for snide mutterings behind their back in place of face-to-face derision.

Criticise her all you like, but the now deceased Lynda-Lee Potter, of Daily Mail notoriety, despaired of the opposite end of the spectrum; those turncoats of the regional accent world, like the nation’s beloved Scouser, Cilla Black. At least Lynda was openly snobby, a miner’s daughter on a quest for self-improvement and Received Pronounciation, whose accent only ever rose to the fore when exasperated by her own children!

Cilla Black, however, prior to the onslaught of Beatlemania, hid her accent, and now feels at liberty to deliver a hammed-up caricature of her phonic-self every time she’s on the telly.

If anyone, and that includes those part of the phenomenon called the Mockney, persisted in that, then Apple will have problems with Estuary English – let alone genuine regional accents – for years to come.

…and don’t get me started on Lulu…

Andrew Watson is a student at UpToSpeed in Bournemouth. You can follow more of his stories on his blog.

The iPhone 4S

At their press conference in Curpetino, California this evening, Apple announced the iPhone 4S. The fifth iteration of the iPhone will be 2x faster than the iPhone 4 with a dual-core A5 processor and dual-core graphics – making gameplay and other graphics-related output seven times faster than the previous version.

An improved antenna design is also featured, promising ‘improved call quality’ – hopefully avoiding the signal issues that plagued the release of the iPhone 4.

Availability and pricing

The prices for the iPhone 4S are as follows:

16GB – $199 / 32GB – $299 / 64GB – $399

Most importantly, these will be on a 2-year contract.

Subsequently, the iPhone 3GS will be free on contract and a new 8GB iPhone 4 will cost $99.

The iPhone 4S (with its new 64GB model) will be available from 14th October (with pre-orders from 7th October) with Apple announcing it will be available in 22 countries by 28th October.

A new camera

As widely rumoured, the iPhone 4S is now a world phone, capable of running or CDMA and GSM networks. The 4S also features a new and improved, 8 megapixel camera producing 3264 x 2248 photos – 60% more pixels than photos produced by the iPhone 4. The new camera also allows images to be captured by the iPhone 5 up to 33% faster.

The rear camera of the 4S also saw a bump in video quality from 720p to 1080p – now true HD quality along with video image stabilisation and noise reduction.

Assistant announced

Perhaps the most impressive feature to be announced though was the much rumoured Assistant. Announced under the moniker of Siri – named after the original company that developed the technology it was described as ‘the intelligent assistant that gets things done just by asking’.

Siri was demonstrated with a number of commands including “Wake me up at 6:00 am” to which it responded “I set the alarm for 6:00am” and “Find my a Greek restaurant in Palo Alto” with the response, “I’ve found 14 Greek restaurants in Palo Alto, I’ve arranged them by rating.”.

iOS 5 – available from 12th October

Scott Forstall, Senior VP for iOS Software also took to the stage to announce that iOS 5, Apple’s latest mobile operating system, would be available to download from 12th October. A new app, Cards, was also announced. Cards allows you to order and purchase prints from photos taken directly from your iOS device. The app isn’t included as part of iOS 5 but is available to download for free.

A previously unannounced iOS 5 app, Find My Friends, allows you to quickly and easily find out the location of friends who opt to share their location with you was also debuted. The interface for Find My Friends is fairly similar to Find My iPhone and works in a similar way, except you wont be able set a passcode for, or wipe, your friends…

iPod Nano and iPod Touch refreshed

Phil Schiller gave a brief presentation to the assembled media in which he announced updates to two models of the iPod family – the iPod Nano and the iPod Touch. For the Nano, Schiller showed off an improved UI (with bigger icons), improved clock faces, and built-in GPS. At $129 for the 8GB and $149 for the 16GB model, these are available to buy today. For the iPod Touch, a white version was introduced with a slashed price point (down to $199 for the 8GB model) available from October 12th. Naturally, they’ll be running iOS 5 as well.

The event, which is also being streamed live to Apple’s Covent Garden store in London, was hosted and presented by CEO Tim Cook, a first for the long-serving employee since Steve Jobs’ departure in August.

As well the obvious product announcements, Cook told told the media that the iPhone 4 sees a 125% increase in sales year-on-year and that 95% of Fortune 500 companies are now testing or deploying the flagship mobile device. Scott Forstall announced that iOS is the no.1 mobile operating system with a 43% market share and that one billion apps are downloaded for iOS devices each month.

More details to follow soon.

Whilst the world waits with baited breath for the announcement of Apple's next iteration of the iPhone, the rumour mills are running riot. Fear not though, we're here to make sense of them for you.

As we pointed out in our latest issue of the Magazine (that’s issue 96, in case you’re feeling lazy), there was a distinct lack of an eagerly-anticipated iPhone announcement at this years WWDC. It’s been some time now since we’ve heard anything about the newest iteration of Apple’s ground-breaking mobile phone and as such, the rumour mills are in full flow. It only seems right then, that I round those rumours up and give you our take on them and maybe throw a few of our own into the mix. Grab some food, sit back, relax and enjoy iCreate’s iPhone rumours round-up.

We might see a new iPhone parked on a charger like this soon

• Rumour no.1: “Apple are developing a new way of charing the iPhone”
This one is fresh as a daisy, and it doesn’t seem entirely unrealistic. With iOS 5′s ‘PC free’ technology allowing users to cut the cables when it comes to syncing and updating their iOS devices, Apple may well choose to lose that dock connector and keep charing as simple as dropping your iPhone onto a charging station. The clever folk at Mobee have already done it with their magic charger and HP have already done it with their Touchstone technology, so Apple, the ball is in your court.

• Rumour no.2: “The new iPhone will be thinner and lighter with a design like the iPhone 4″
This one is almost a no brainer. If the evolution of pretty much any other Apple product is anything to go by, then the new iPhone will most probably be thinner and lighter. Still don’t believe me? I’ll point you to the iPad 2. As for its design following in the footsteps of the iPhone 4, that’s fairly likely too. Unless Apple throw the curveball of building an entirely new device from the ground up (which they have been known to do on occasions), the ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ mentality might well prevail. It certainly was the case for every iPhone up until the 3GS. Besides, according to Apple, glass and aluminium is very much in vogue right now.

• Rumour no.3: “It’ll have a dual-core A5 processor and work on both GSM and CDMA networks”
Woah there! That’s a lot to take in, isn’t it? The frustrating verdict on that? Yes and yes…probably. That dual-core A5 chip seems to have gone down a treat in the iPad 2, so why not spec up the iPhone with one as well? It seems like a bit of a no-brainer really. As for the GSM/CDMA rumour, it’s not looking too bad. Whilst it doesn’t matter so much to us UK folk, the GSM/CDMA divide is a bit of a pain over the in the US, so having a world phone would make life a lot easier. But as ever with Apple, I wouldn’t hold your breath. Especially like that time everyone did at the WWDC waiting for an iPhone announcment…

• Rumour no.4: “It’ll have an 8-megapixel camera and an edge-to-edge touchscreen”
Again, a bit of a no-brainer upgrade on the camera. If Apples latest refresh of the iMacs and MacBook Pros are anything to go by, it seems that the trend in Curpetino right now is to make things faster and cheaper, whilst upping the spec across the board for good measure. If Apple follow suit with the next iteration of the iPhone it only seems logical that the camera is one of the first features to get a bit of Apple loving. Could we see a 720p HD front-facing camera as well? Doubtful, but it’d be a welcome improvement on the VGA one that graces the iPhone 4. As for the edge-to-edge touchscreen, I’m not so sure. The home button is nowhere near redundant enough to lose it in favour of a gesture-based home command that some rumours have pointed to, but I wouldn’t write off the idea of a bigger touchscreen or even a higher-res one.

It's thinner and lighter, but it's not the new iPhone (yet)

• Rumour no.5: “Steve Jobs and Steve Ballmer are actually the same person. Think about it, have you ever seen them in the same room?”
Whilst this wasn’t what we expected when we Tweeted this morning asking for rumours, it certainly raised a few laughs and smiles during the tense deadline times in the office, so it seems only fair that I take this one with the same gusto as the rest of the rumours. Whilst it is very true that you never really Steve or Steve in the same room (confusing already, right?), all I can say is that one dresses a lot better than the other and therefore they can’t possibly the same person. I’m sure you can guess which Steve is which there…

Feeling a bit left out that you didn’t get asked for rumours? Then it probably means you’re not following us on Twitter! Head over to twitter.com/iCreateMagazine and hit that lovely green follow button. When you’re done, why not Tweet us the craziest new iPhone rumour you’ve heard of? Eternal glory goes to anyone who manages to make us laugh out loud.

With this in mind, Just Mobile has updated its support for Apple’s tiny gadget, allowing you to stand your smartphone next to your Mac, safe in the knowledge that it looks as cool as can be.
The stand is made from aluminium and does an excellent job of mimicking Apple’s iMac ‘foot’ that has become a key to its design. A rubber grip underneath ensures the stand won’t slip around and the iPhone 4 fits snugly and safely into the X-shaped holster. This holder attaches to the foot using a screw-on grip which can be tightened to hold the phone still, or left very slightly loose, allowing you to rotate the iPhone into portrait or landscape mode with ease.
The whole thing is sturdy and feels high- quality and the hole in the back of the stand means cables will always be tidy, just like with an iMac. We were disappointed that iPhones with cases wouldn’t fit into the stand and that the 30-pin Apple charger didn’t fit through the hole (we had to feed through the USB end), but this is the best iPhone stand we’ve seen for a long time.
